The Electoral Commission has set January 27, 2026, as the date for a parliamentary re-run in Ajuri County, Alebtong District, following disputes over results from selected polling stations.
According to the Commission’s spokesperson, Julius Muchunguzi, the re-run will be conducted in 18 polling stations where election materials and results were reportedly affected by chaos during the initial voting exercise.
The decision follows a petition by the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate, Jalameso Fred, who challenged the provisional results that placed National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer and Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua in the lead.
Jalameso claims that from the 160 polling stations whose results had been tallied, he obtained 14,331 votes compared to Obua’s 12,963 votes. Ajuri County has a total of 178 polling stations.
The Electoral Commission in Alebtong District has not declared a winner, citing the absence of declaration forms from the 18 disputed polling stations.
However, Jalameso argues that results from the affected polling stations show he garnered 766 votes, while Obua received 1,628 votes.
He says that when these figures are added to the results from the 160 polling stations already counted, his total rises to 15,097 votes, compared to Obua’s 14,591 votes, giving him a margin of 506 votes.
The UPC candidate has opposed the decision to conduct a re-run in the 18 polling stations, warning that it could give his opponents an opportunity to manipulate the electoral process.
The January 27 re-run is expected to determine the final outcome of the closely contested Ajuri County parliamentary race.
